Friday, Jan. 7

*The Duneland Family YMCA is hosting a blood drive with the American Red Cross from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the gym. Call (800) 733-2767 or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter duneymca to schedule an appointment. Donors who join the Y will have their joiner’s fee waived.

*An all-you-can-eat fish fry takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. at American Legion Post #21, 107 N. Flynn Road/U.S, 421, Westville. Dinners include hand-breaded pollock, chicken strips, French fries, baked potato, creamy coleslaw, salad, roll and dessert. Adults are $14; seniors 60 and up and veterans are $10; kids 12 and under are $5; and preschoolers are free. Carry-outs are available. Call (219) 785-2923 to preorder for carry-outs; otherwise it’s first come, first serve.

Saturday, Jan. 8

*The Duneland Weavers Guild will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at Three Moon Fiberworks, 402 Broadway, Chesterton. There will be a hands-on program after the meeting presented by Sherron Pampalone for weaving on a circular cardboard loom. Participants need to bring cardboard cutting scissors; a small piece of cardboard; tape, a ruler and pencil; varying textures of yarn bits to weave with; and a thick cotton for warp, such as Sugar and Cream, 5/2 or 3/2.

Sunday, Jan. 9

*St. John’s United Church will host its free community dinner from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the church, 225 W. Lincoln Ave., Chesterton. It will be in the form of a drive-thru to pick up packaged meals. Enter from Lincoln Street only. The meal includes white chili, hotdog and a bun, and a brownie for dessert. All are welcome. For more information, call (219) 1476.

Monday, Jan. 10

*The Chesterton Woman’s Club meets at noon at the Duneland Boys & Girls Club, 512 W. 1100 North, Chesterton. Food pantry items for donation are pasta and tomato sauce. The meeting hostesses are Gerry Malokowski and Kathy Hanson. Jeanie Campbell Buchheit is the speaker for the meeting. She and her family have been raising service dogs since 1992 and she will discuss dog training.

*The Duneland School Board will meet at 5 p.m. in executive session at the Administration Center, 601 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton, to discuss training.

*The Duneland School Board will meet at 6 p.m. for its regular meeting at the Chesterton Middle School Auditorium, 651 W. Morgan Ave., Chesterton. Masks are required and provided if unable to maintain 6 feet of social distancing.

*Porter County election officials will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. in the commissioners chambers of the administration center, 155 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso, for public input on vote centers.

*The Duneland YMCA is hosting Parents Night Out to give parents a break while kids engage in safe and fun activities from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Y. The night is open to kids ages 6 weeks to 11 years old and includes games, crafts, dinner and more. The cost per session, per child is $15 for Y members and $20 for the community. *The Dunes-Calumet Audubon Society meets at 9 a.m. with trip leader and board member Julie Bonnema at the Indiana Welcome Center, 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond, and will caravan to close birding locations to observe Lake County wintering waterfall. *The Dunes-Calumet Audubon Society will present a Zoom program on wintertime duck species that can be found in Northwest Indiana. Board member and top area birder Michael Topp will go over identification points for the wide variety of ducks found during the cold winter months.
